The Cabal's Jackal
Little is known of the early years of this affable killer. The Imperial powers awarded him their highest accolade for efficient killing under the guise of war, the Starburst for Extreme “Heroism”. How many innocents died for this vain creature to parade around in his medals is unknown, but if the records of other Imperial slaughterers are a guide, he has waded through a river of blood.
We come across his record several years ago on Regina. Officially registered as a mercenary as other freelance Shadow enforcers have done, he stood out little until the Neutral Zone years. His alliance with the late Joseph Maceneil spanned over a year during which he was seen often in the company of the late Frederick Aledon. This writer has seen reports and photos that show him with the trusting Aledon children. Only later can the creeping horror of those photos be explained.
Why Joseph Maceneil had to die has been a question only the bravest investigators have asked. What is known is that Raller was on the grassy knoll seconds before “Mac” was obliterated by an unknown Shadow weapon. Raller was seen in the company of Michael Griffin at that time but Griffin is known to be a knife man of considerable repute. Knowledgeable sources believe the Marine Commando trained Raller was there to make sure the hit team didn’t miss and may be the one that triggered
That incident seemed to be the start of Raller’s promotion within the controlling Shadow Cabal. He, a Varg’r, was often seen in the presence of Christopher Blaelok, a Solomani and puppet head of the Palladium Group, an action branch of the vast conspiracy. Raller was only a “consultant” according to inside sources, but no one is willing to tell what a Commando trained killer was consulted about. Some have said that Raller was in fact acting in a role he has continued in as the enforcer for the Shadows, keeping their various figureheads such as Blaelok in line.
It seems that when ever trouble erupts on Regina, Raller is either in the thick of things or provided with an iron clad alibi. The robot rampage in Aguilon Park, the first death of Corina LING-Armstrong, the closing of the Solomani Embassy and the declaration of the Consul, the before mentioned Christopher Blaelok, as persona non-gratis. Raller was seen with Ambassador Veronica Liu and Acting Consul LeBland before their deaths. When Viktor Androchev fled for his life Ghaer Raller stepped in and took power, in the form of Lieutenant Governor, like a good soldier until a true power, William Grey, could put his puppet in place to control Regina.
After that Raller attended Grey and his party to the controlled anointing of Corina LING-Armstrong. With the outcome never in doubt but acted out like a third rate Tri-D movie, Raller was placed in Corina’s “Guard”. No doubt the radiation-warped figure of the Shadows’ jackal is to remind her who truly controls Regina.
